13 (Uncommon) Bible Verses to Get You Through Your Breakup

5

It’s okay, we’ve all done it.

After a break-up we want some comfort from scripture so we search “Break Up Bible Verse.” That might be how you ended up here.

A lot of those verses are about how everything in life happens for a reason. That’s a good thing to hear, but often not what we want to hear in a time of suffering.

So, I put together a list of Bible verses to read when you’re feeling particularly hopeless. Some affirm your suffering and others offer hope for what comes after.

I hope you find them helpful in your prayer.

Ecclesiastes 1:8 - All things are wearisome, too wearisome for words.

Ecclesiastes is one of the saddest books in the bible. It is written from the perspective of Solomon, who had everything he ever wanted but it left him unfulfilled. Living for things of this world (even good things, like relationships) won’t fulfill you. Only God can.

Job 1:21 - The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

Job had everything taken away form him; his family, his property, even his health. In the midst of this he said these words. We accept good things from God, we should also accept “bad” things. We don’t actually know what is best for us.

Psalm 55:13-14 - It is not an enemy that reviled me…but you my friend.

This psalm speaks of the heartbreak of betrayal. Maybe you feel betrayed by someone you loved. This feeling is worse than being hurt by an enemy. King David understood this and wrote about it in Psalm 55.

Psalm 20:8 - Some rely on chariots, other on horses, but we on the name of the Lord.

When things in our life are going well, it’s easy to put our trust in our own power. We shouldn’t do this. We should rely on God.

Luke 10:41-42 - Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing.

The Lord says this to Martha while her sister, Mary, sits at the feet of Jesus. We like to distract ourselves when going through hard things. but it’s better instead to sit at Jesus’s feet like Mary.

Psalm 107:28 -In their distress they cried to the Lord who brought them out of their peril.

This psalm is about a ship and its crew in the middle of a storm. Their own strength fails and they can only cry out to God. But He rescued them. If you feel like your strength is drained, cry out to God and He will rescue you.

Hosea 2:14 [RSVCE] - I will allure her, I will draw her into the wilderness and speak tenderly to her.

God says this about His people Israel when they worship false gods in the book of Hosea. In order to bring them back, He says He will take them out into the desert. The wilderness is silent and barren. There is no comfort out there. God leads us into the desert to show us He is our comfort.

Matthew 16:24 - Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.

Like it or not, this break-up is your cross. Don’t avoid it. Pick it up and follow Him.

Luke 12:32 - Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.

It’s easy to forget, but God wants to give you Heaven. He doesn’t want you to suffer forever, He wants you to be with Him.

Romans 8:18 - I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us.

This suffering only lasts for a moment when compared to eternity.

Isaiah 54:11 - Oh afflicted one, storm tossed and not comforted, I am about to set your stones in antimony and lay your foundations with sapphires.

Isaiah speaks these words to a Jerusalem afraid for its life. It is a promise that God will build them up stronger and more glorious than before.

Isaiah 43:1 - Do not fear, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by name and you are mine.

Don’t forget you belong to Him, not any person. He has called you by your name. You belong to Him.

Revelation 22:4 - They will look upon his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. Night will be no more, nor will they need light from lamp or sun, for the Lord God shall give them light, and they shall reign forever and ever.

This verse concludes Night Prayer on Sunday evenings. It comes at the end of Scripture and reveals what the world to come will look like. No darkness will exist, only light. And you shall reign with Him forever and ever.

So, there you have it! 13 scripture verses that will help alleviate some of the pain that can come with a rough breakup. Breaking up with someone is rarely easy, even if it is the right thing to do. Remember, the Lord is close to the brokenhearted. If you're suffering from a painful breakup, know that God is with you and cares about your pain. And, you can count on Him to prepare an even better future for you.
