12 Simple Tricks to Up Your Attractiveness (For Men!)

Are you trying to catch her eye?
I’m going to go out on a limb and assume everyone reading this has heard of things like chivalry, a strong spiritual life, and an appreciation for Sacramental Catholic marriage. These things are definitely the building blocks of a good romantic relationship!
Sometimes, though, they are focused to the exclusion of practical, everyday advice for bachelors in the dating world. Not everything about dating has to do with prayer and preparing for marriage, after all. Much of romance, especially in the early stages, lies in first impressions and attraction.
Enter this post! I chatted with a bunch of women I know, both single and married. I asked them what little particular things never failed to catch their eye in a man. With their responses (and my own) in hand, I compiled a list of twelve easy-peasy things you men can do right now—yes, right now—to up your attractiveness!
Appearance:
- When you wear a button-up or flannel shirt, try rolling the sleeves up to your elbows. For some reason, this is a thousand times more attractive to us ladies! I have no idea why. But pretty much every girl I know agrees.
- Smell nice! This is a pretty basic one, I’ll admit. But if you haven’t tried it yet, now is the time! On top of your most basic hygiene, try one spritz of a nice cologne, and maybe keep some gum or mints on you for post-meal breath freshening.
- Keep your beard well-groomed. Women generally like a little facial hair on men, because it shows off your masculine nature. But there is a caveat: we prefer it to be well-groomed. So abandon the Pa Ingalls look of the pioneer days, and instead, aim for a well-trimmed and clean look. If you don’t like facial hair or keeping up with it, that’s okay too—clean-shaven is also a trim look.
- Stand up straight. This broadens the line of your shoulders, makes you look taller, and projects an air of confidence to anyone who sees you. Seriously, no matter what your natural build is, standing up straight will make you look more masculine and muscular. (Just Google classic Controposso art and you’ll see what I mean.) There is no downside here! Good posture also has the benefit of improving your spinal health and minimizing back pain over time.
Skill Sets:
- Know how to hold a baby. A man who knows how to handle little ones is ATTRACTIVE. Ladies subconsciously (or consciously!) think “oh, he’d be a great father!” when we see a fellow who knows what to do with an infant or toddler. What could be better to attract a potential wife?
- Laugh at yourself. Everyone likes to feel comfortable and cheery on dates, and nobody can loosen up if their date is strung tighter than a clothesline. You don’t have to be a class clown or have a repertoire of jokes on hand. Just remember not to take yourself too seriously and look for the humor when things go awry. For instance, if you spill your drink, laugh at yourself, and say “my shirt looks better this way, don’t you think?” (Easy humor will also make you feel and look more confident.)
- Have a pitch-in attitude. Ladies really appreciate a gentleman who isn’t afraid to jump in with a task at hand. Whether it’s doing dishes when he meets your parents or helping out the old lady on the side of the road, a man willing to lend a hand is doubly attractive compared to someone who doesn’t step up.
- Chop wood outside with an old-fashioned ax. Or move some heavy furniture. Or drop down and do twenty pushups. We girls are suckers for shameless shows of strength. What can I say? It’s hardwired in our hormones!
- Drive well. Many women prefer to ride passenger. This honestly makes sense because in a marriage, when little ones come along, a mother is often distracted checking on the baby or keeping a toddler buckled in the car seat. Driving well and responsibly is one of many ways to show a lady you can protect and provide.
Miscellaneous:
- Carry a multi-tool or jackknife in your pocket. Girls will be surprised and impressed at your preparedness when you’re ready to handle a mishap! Honestly, every farmer I know (and I know lots) always has these in his pocket, and it comes in really handy in a variety of situations.
- Keep a (clean) sweatshirt of yours in your car. Everyone knows we girls prefer to wear men’s sweatshirts because they’re comfy! We also adore it when a gentleman can offer us something of his to stay warm.
- Put your phone down. This one goes for both genders, honestly. Being present in the moment, especially when you are with other people, is imperative to making a good impression and creating connection. So put the phone away not just on dates, but also when you’re with friends, at family functions, or even alone in public. You can always bring a book, notebook, or a small project along to turn to in case of boredom.
I am honestly curious what you gentlemen would report if/when you implement a few of these tricks. Would it take a while for you to feel comfortable before seeing any noticeable difference in your romantic life? Or would you see immediate results?
There’s one way to find out. Pick a couple of these tips and see what happens when you try them. Remember, with great attractiveness comes great responsibility!
