Drop The Pen & Let God Write Your Love Story

I have always dreamed about my story. Not the story of how I would land my dream job or even my life story overall, but the story of how I would meet my future husband. I always assumed that the storylines of the romantic comedies that make us ladies swoon would be boring compared to the meaningful first meeting I would have with the man whose last name would eventually become my own.
Maybe our paths would cross at a coffee shop and we would share a smile as we both realized that our drink of choice was the same – vanilla white chocolate mocha, no whip. Or perhaps we would bump into each other in the produce section at the grocery store or in the corner of a cozy bookstore. I imagined that years down the road, new acquaintances would ask us intently how we first met and after a knowing glance we would both say, “Well, it’s quite a story.”
The stories that Harry and Sally, Kate and Leopold and even Noah and Allie could tell their future grandchildren would pale in comparison to what I always knew would be an epic moment.
While I always knew in my heart that my story of how I would meet my future husband would be one-of-a-kind, I never once factored in an online dating plotline. How romantic is it to create an online profile and put yourself on display for hundreds of singles to pick apart? When people ask me how I met my future husband, I didn’t want to simply respond “online.” I wanted the romance, the chance meeting and the charming first conversation to be uniquely special.
Well, as you know from my “Faith, Hope and Love” blog posts, I met my boyfriend on CatholicMatch in my first week of membership. It wasn’t a chance meeting at a local hangout, but it was the culmination of years of dating that brought us both to that very moment. The first message wasn’t a declaration of love that fills the pages of a novel, but it was the gateway to the realization of many similarities – a shared alma mater, a similar upbringing, a fervent faith and even the same birthday only a few years apart. We nearly missed each other in a busy restaurant on our first date, and I almost left my phone behind after hours of flowing conversation, making our first in-person meeting anything but forgettable.
The story of how I met George, a man who will always have my heart, isn’t the epic tale that I conjured in my head through the ups and downs of dating. It goes far beyond a story that I could ever dream for myself, and I encourage each of you to put down the figurative pens that you have held on to for years. CatholicMatch is a part of your love story – embrace it and perhaps your future spouse will enter the storyline as a lead character very soon. I know mine has.
Online dating wasn’t a part of the love story I had written in my head, but it was in God’s story all along.
