It's Time to Fight Spiritual Lethargy
12
In these ever-changing times of COVID-19, new norms are constantly arising.
There seems to be a certain lethargy that has set in amongst people who continue to seek a new balance between safety and community interaction.
Here in Connecticut, most folks seem to be following the rules of social distancing and mask-wearing depending upon who they are with and what they are doing. In all of this time, there has been only one instance I have witnessed where one person expressed misplaced anger at a store clerk. Thanks be to God for a new infusion of charity among people!
These new situations have provided ample opportunities to really take a good hard look at those things that are most important in our day-to-day living.
Do you live near your family? How often do you check-in?
Have you gone back to your place of work? What strategies are you using to keep safe and productive?
All of this focus on health and safety tends to push our spiritual needs to the back burner.
One of the blessings of this time that we need to take advantage of is the opportunity to refocus our spiritual life. What is the best way to have certainty in this time that is replete with confusion and change? Continue to keep your eyes on the unchanging Lord of life.
Do you have a regular routine of prayer and sacramental life?
Make a plan to spend at least five minutes every morning reading scripture and then five more minutes sifting out the message that God has for you. Scripture is the living word, and each day provides a new chance to see how scripture can come alive in your life.
Add the mid-day Angelus to your daily routine. You can even do so at work, right before you have lunch.
Find a daily Mass that works in your schedule. Receive the Eucharist more than once a week and see how that dedication to our Lord begins to reshape you.
Set a schedule to head to confession once a month. This practice alone helps to bring a new self-awareness into your life.
Start saying a daily Examen. This will help to prepare you for your time in confession and also show you how to find gratitude in even the most challenging of days.
It is now more important than ever to prioritize this aspect of your life.
Finding time for God in this ever-changing world will help to anchor us to that which is most important: Jesus Christ, the master of our salvation.
It will also dispel some of the darkness and uncertainty that surrounds us. This change brings with it a new, positive spirit that acts as a light to those around us. And isn’t that one of the most important things we’re called to be: a light shining in the darkness.
Trust me when I assure you that nothing is more attractive than a person who knows God and shares that light in unassuming ways with those around them!
