CatholicMatch Institute contributor, Jessica Zimanske has had some tough questions to face when explaining why she and her fiancé, George, weren't living together before their wedding day.

Jessica said that, "even prior to our engagement, well-meaning friends and co-workers questioned why George and I were not 'taking our relationship to the next level' and forgoing our double house/rent payments for a single mortgage payment. Post-proposal, the questions resurfaced, and we both had to gently explain to many of our peers our intent to live separately until marriage."

Popular culture believes it is normal to "try it out" first to make sure a couple is compatible with each other before they tie the knot. With so many people deciding to live with their significant other before marriage, being strong in one's Catholic convictions has become very difficult.

Jessica encourages Catholic couples to think of each other as a unit living a faithful life under God. Everything that you choose to do right now effects your marriage. There are many sacrifices that you will have to make while dating, but you are preparing for a sacrament and a life-long grace-filled marriage. All of your preparations and waiting will be truly rewarded.

If you feel pressure to move-in with your boyfriend or girlfriend, Jessica encourages you to turn to the sacraments and ask God how you can stand up for your committed Catholic beliefs. The point of marriage is to bring your spouse to heaven and if your significant other is asking you to do something that goes against your values then that should be a red flag. Communicate about what is necessary for dating with marriage in mind and stay committed to your faith convictions.
