He Thought Her Profile Was Fake!

Ashley says she had “tried the ‘traditional’ dating methods, but was not able to truly connect with anyone - especially on a deeper, faithful level.”

She wanted something more...

Looking for that deeper, more meaningful relationship, she turned to CatholicMatch and signed up for a three-month subscription. And, about three weeks later, a man named Jesse popped up in one of her searches.

Ashley remembers, “His smile immediately caught my attention. The more I read his profile, the more I wanted to reach out to him… but, I decided to wait and see if he would make a move first. Several days went by and nothing - he even looked at my profile!”  Ah, the online daters’ well-known letdown of profile views with no follow-through. . .

So, she took matters into her own hands!

Thankfully for this couple, Ashley decided to take action. “I was a little disheartened until I mustered up enough courage to message him first,” she recalls. What she didn’t know at the time was the drama unfolding at the other end of the exchange.

It turns out Jesse, who had only been on the CatholicMatch website for a couple of months, had his reasons for not reaching out. He was suspicious about her all-too-lovely profile, and thought it was FAKE! Thankfully, he ran this suspicion by a friend, who convinced Jesse to message this looks-too-good-to-be-true lady back. After all this debate within 24 hours of receiving Ashley’s first message, he sent a reply hoping she was actually the girl in the profile.

Ashley remembers, “He responded and much to my surprise, admitted he thought my profile was fake – after reading my profile, he didn’t believe I was real (he was already laying on the flattery thick).”

So, they got to talking!

Jesse was also upfront and honest with her right away about other details. In his first response, he admitted he was not in the city he listed on his profile. He was currently in Cuba deployed with the Army National Guard, and his deployment was scheduled to end in early March, which was approximately two months from the time he messaged Ashley.

This didn’t phase Ashley at all. She says, “Being the daughter of two military parents, I was up for the challenge when it came to staying in touch. There was something special about him.”

Things took off swiftly from that point on! “After that first message, not a day went by when we weren’t communicating. We progressed our chats from CatholicMatch to WhatsApp and before long we were on the phone talking for hours at a time,” notes the couple.

And then the week finally came for his return home and Ashley, “Couldn’t have been more excited (and nervous) to meet him in person! He showed up for our date with a bouquet of flowers in hand and the sweetest smile I had ever seen. Our first date lasted 13 hours. From that day on, our lives have never been the same.” They officially began dating a week later and from then on they say, “Witnessed our relationship and love for one another grow with each passing day. We help root each other deeper in our faith and challenge the other to become the best version of [ourselves].”

Then, a gorgeous proposal!

A year and a half after that first fateful date, the couple went on a ten-day excursion to Peru. “We spent the days surrounded by beautiful landscapes, culture, and wonderful company. One of our last cities to visit was Puno where we stayed at an Airbnb on one of the Uros Islands - which are floating, manmade, reed islands - in Lake Titicaca.”

Floating on top of the crystal waters under clear blue skies in the morning sun, Jesse got down on one knee and proposed.

After another year and a half of engagement, “We were married surrounded by many family and friends who will continue to help guide us in our marriage. We are beyond blessed that the Lord allowed our paths to cross. In our time together, we have shared many blessings, laughs, tears (both happy and sad), smiles, adventures, and made memories that will last a lifetime.”

A sweet story like Ashley and Jesse’s shows how even the most uncertain first impression can blossom into something truly beautiful!

And what is their advice to other couples?

Keeping your top priority at the top. They remark, “We were both looking for a partner who sought to build the other up spiritually and help to reach Heaven.” As well as good things coming to those who wait! The couple states that, “The Lord taught us patience and we were each other's reward.”
