Brandon Heath’s “Love Never Fails” is one of my favorite songs.
The beautiful words of 1 Corinthians 13 are put to melody, highlighting the truth of love:
“Love is not proud/ Love does not boast/ Love after all/ Matters the most ... Nothing is greater than this/Greater than this.”
Friends of mine had this song played at their wedding ... and Brandon Heath sang it at Carrie Underwood’s wedding (for their first dance)!
Wonderful words to start a marriage. We hear this reading at most weddings for good reason: A bride and groom should begin their life together recognizing what real love is (which is too often distorted in our culture today).
Spouses need to live this love, being gifts of self to one another. Catholic marriage is a sacrament, after all. Husbands and wives reflect the love Christ has for his church.
God gives couples grace to do so. Heath’s song always reminds me of that. A perfect reminder for Valentine’s Day, including for singles.
We should look for spouses who exhibit this kind of love...and reflect this love ourselves.
We should exemplify this humble-patient-kind love and pray that God allows us to meet spouses who also exhibit these traits.
God is love. And love never fails.
