Mary Ann loved to laugh, but it had been a while since the 42-year-old widow from the Detroit area had done so. She came to CatholicMatch, looking to rebuild life for herself and her two boys, but the first relationship she had didn’t work out, and she let her subscription lapse. But loving again was something she wanted, and when she got a holiday discount offer, Mary Ann decided to renew. It didn’t take long for her to get results—and some laughter.
“Within one week I received messages from prospective members who wanted to get to know me better,” she said. Tom, five years older than her and also living in the Detroit area was the one who got her attention and through an unconventional way. “(He) told me his opinion about my favorite actor listed on my profile,” she recalled. Her favorites are Denzel Washington and Tom Cruise, and while Mary Ann didn’t reveal the exact wording of Tom’s critique, it got her to laugh.
In addition to getting a laugh from Mary Ann, Tom also had her interest, and they kept communication online going for two weeks. There was enough there that it was worth meeting face-to-face. The connection in person was immediate. “It didn’t take us long to know we were destined to be together,” Mary Ann told CatholicMatch. “At the end of our date we both wanted to stick together.”
Stick together they have. Over the next two months they each met the other’s families, including the all-important meeting of Tom and Mary Ann’s two boys. Whatever trials Mary Ann has gone through, she’s never wavered in how much she loves her boys—and we can’t forget to leave out her love for her dogs as well. She sees the fact that Tom hasn’t been married and doesn’t have kids of his own as just another sign of how seamlessly he integrates into her family. Mary Ann values the simple things in life—a quiet dinner together, a warm fire and simply being with a man who wants to care for a woman. In Tom, she’s found that.
“After my husband died, I…trusted our Lord that He would lead me to the perfect match one day,” she said. “I stayed the course and trusted the process of finding my soul mate. I never thought it was possible to find a soul mate at 42 years of age. (But) It worked!”
