Catholic Women Still Admire Kate's Modest Wedding Dress

Last year at this time, I made scones for breakfast. It seemed appropriate for the occasion: royal wedding day. (No, I did not get up in the middle of the night to watch it live; I taped it for later viewing.)

I thought Kate’s dress was lovely, just what I would like to wear when, God willing, I walk down the aisle myself: elegant, modest and pretty. I’ve been thinking about wedding fashions a lot lately because I just edited a story for the National Catholic Register about modest wedding gowns: "Here Comes The Catholic Bride."

The brides quoted in the article said they looked for the same things that Kate’s dress portrayed to show respect for themselves and before God at the altar as they received the sacrament of matrimony.

Laura Hepler, for instance, modified her mother’s wedding dress, worn in 1979 and again in 2012. “I have never felt comfortable in a strapless dress,” she told Register correspondent Lori Chaplin, whose Pinterest page showcases modest wedding fashion.

One highlight of the royal wedding, for me, was the prayer the couple wrote for their special day, seeking divine guidance in their married life. Very appropriate, I thought.

“If you are what you should be, you will set the whole world on fire!” St. Catherine of Siena advised. Those wise words were quoted in the homily at the wedding, which took place, appropriately, on St. Catherine’s feast day, April 29.

In light of the single life and one-day-in-the-future weddings, I would also add that if you are what you should be, you will attract the spouse God has planned for you. Good thoughts for you and me both!

Now I want to bake some more scones…
