Widow & Widower Meet At Disney, Get Engaged On A Train

CatholicMatch isn’t just for people in their 20s and 30s, as even a glance through profiles, the message forums and the success stories will make evident.

The latest evidence of that comes from Vicki and Stephen, aged 60 and 63 respectively, who not only show that “Love after 60 does exist!” as Vicki enthusiastically put it, but who made a Texas-to-Boston relationship work and overcame some initial misunderstandings at the outset of meeting each other on CatholicMatch.

Vicki had been widowed for two years and was a CatholicMatch member in June 2009, when she noticed Stephen’s profile show up as a “new member.” She sent him a note welcoming to him to the site and wishing him luck.

Stephen wrote back with a thank you and also asked her about some of her profile information.

“I immediately resented the fact that he was questioning my faith,” Vicki said. “I wrote him a very long response, adding my phone number…saying if he wanted to discuss this further he could call me.”

Invitations take many forms and one can’t be picky about how they come. Stephen took his invitation and called Vicki that very night. A three-hour conversation ensued and nightly conversations followed.

If one person is in Texas and the other in Boston, where’s the best place to meet?

How does Orlando sound?

It worked for Vicki and Stephen, who wanted their first face-to-face meeting to be at a place where they were both outside their comfort zone. They also wanted a place where they would have fun, and they spent their time getting to know each other in Disney World and Epcot Center.

In September Stephen took a trip to Boston and the couple road the train to Portland, Maine. On the train he proposed, and Vicki accepted.

Which brought to mind another question: If one person’s in Texas and the other’s in Boston, where do you marry?

How does California sound?

It was in Vicki’s original home parish, with the consent of their respective pastors, that the wedding took place.

Three years after being widowed, Stephen had a new love. And this young-at-heart couple honeymooned at what Vicki calls the “most fun place on earth – Disneyland!”

Vicki and Stephen are truly young at heart, something that surely comes about through the great love they practice – not only for each other, but for the warm memories of their departed spouses.

God left room in their hearts for all.
