Check out this wonderful column by Ann Augherton, managing editor of the award-winning Catholic Herald in Arlington, Va. It chronicles a high-tech, cross-country courtship (850 miles, to be exact), but my favorite part is the story of how romance first blossomed between these two talented Catholic editors:
My friends tease me that it was the pope who brought us together. The back story: I was on assignment to cover the pope’s September 2006 visit to Germany. My future husband, fellow Catholic journalist Christopher Gunty, was on the same assignment. We had known each other professionally for years, from conferences and e-mail.
Halfway through the week we visited a church in Altotting, where the tour guide pointed out a shrine to St. Heilige Munditia, the patron saint of single women. That was my kind of shrine, so I made a quick visit.
Coincidence or not, the following day Christopher asked if I wanted to go for a walk after dinner. We’d been running from press platform to press center, and from town to town all week, but now the bulk of the work was over and our group was in Oberammergau, a quaint little Bavarian village. So after dinner, we strolled along the fairy-tale streets, so quiet you could hear a pin drop or a prayer being answered.
So blame it on the Alps, the star-filled night or St. Heilige, but it became apparent that our friendship had potential.
