The Divine Mercy is an excellent example of the riches of our faith. It is message and a chaplet given by Christ to St. Maria Faustina, a polish nun, in the 1930′s.
The message of The Divine Mercy is simple. It is that God loves us — all of us, and He wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others. Thus, all will come to share His joy.
There is a promise from Jesus for all those who pray the chaplet during the “hour of mercy,” which is 3pm (the hour that Jesus hung on the cross).
“Jesus said to St. Faustina, “This is the hour of great mercy. In this hour, I will refuse nothing to the soul that makes a request of Me in virtue of My Passion (Diary of St. Faustina, 1320).”
It is there to inspire us to persevere, fight the good fight, and trust that God will take care of us and keep us close to Him. As a matter of fact, one man experienced the great mercy of Jesus as a result of the Divine Mercy, and in a very public way. Some people are calling it a miracle.
Fred Barretta, on business in New York City, would be among the 155 people to board an airplane at LaGuardia Airport to fly home to his family in Charlotte, N.C. Ninety seconds after takeoff, the jet hit a flock of geese, the engines exploded, and the plane lost power at 3,200 feet. There was no way the plane could reach a safe landing strip in time.
Just days before, Fred had cleaned out his briefcase and found his Divine Mercy Chaplet booklet, which he took out and prayed while he waited for a business meeting to begin. And in this dire situation as he sat on the plane that was plummeting to earth, he prayed again, relying on the promise of Jesus.
“I prayed with every fiber of emotion and sincerity I could muster, ‘God, please be merciful to us,’” Fred recalled two weeks later.
You may know the rest of the story… the plane landed in the Hudson River, all passengers and crew survived the crash and there were no serious injuries.
But what was even more miraculous about Fred’s story was for a long time before this event, he was a self-proclaimed, half-hearted Catholic. He had a difficult time trusting God after the economy tanked, wiping out most of his savings. But a through an almost un-noticable turn of events, his life changed forever.
As Christmas approached, he began to accept that the only true security one can have in life is in God. This prompted him to make a New Year’s resolution to trust God more and improve his prayer life. That resulted in his praying the chaplet he found in his briefcase and buying a book entitled, The Promises Of The Eucharist”; which ultimately led to his prayer for God’s mercy on the plane.
You just never know. You just never know how God will work in your life.
A lot of Freds are out there, looking for something solid. You may be one. I know a lot of Catholics who has been through a divorce and plagued by worries and concerns over a multitude of things. The Divine Mercy Chaplet is the perfect prayer for you and so many others in times of distress.
I encourage you to take 5 minutes today to say the Divine Mercy Chaplet for your intentions and for those who have no faith, and entrust yourself to Jesus! Jesus, I trust in You!
